BI:Prompt®

Intelligent Template Reporting™

Most business users, use prepared reports to support their daily activities. Reporting analysts generate the reports, and then deliver them to the client for their use.

Often a group of business analysts require similar information, but minor differences in the report layout, or calculations require a new report definition, to support the difference. This creates an almost 1 to one relationship between users and the reports they use.

In an effort to reduce the number of reports that need to be maintained, multi purpose reports are often created, to service the needs of a wider audience. In these cases business analysts receive reports that they must sift through to find their own information.

Another approach often used to allow clients flexibility in reporting, is to provide them with the report designer tool, for them to make changes to the report definition to suit their own requirements. This can be a daunting task for casual users. It can also result in invalid report requests since the analysts changes are unaudited before report execution.

Intelligent Template Reporting provides a low cost solution to personalizing reports for business analysts at all levels, and to significantly reduce the number of reports that the reporting analysts need to maintain to support the business users.

Intelligent Template Reporting allows analysts to create a shell over a report definition. The shell is used to prompt the business analyst for changes they would like to make to the report.

Using BI:Prompt Intelligent Template Reporting provides the following benefits:

  • Business analysts receive reports personalized for their own purposes.
  • Business analysts can save their template reports once they are ready for report generation. This allows business analysts to save the template with their information already selected, thus reducing the effort to create their future reports.
  • Reporting Analysts have fewer report definitions to maintain. A single report definition supported by prompted changes can provide personalization for a wide variety of users interested in similar information.
  • BI:Prompt templates are significantly easier to maintain than report definitions
  • Maintenance of report definitions to respond to new requirements does not necessarily need to be reflected in the prompt templates. Even when the technical aspects of a report are changed, the options the business analysts require to personalize the report are likely to remain the same.
  • Prompted selections can be validated using a variety of methods so the resulting report request is valid.
  • Multiple input types provide business analysts a variety of methods for supplying information.
  • Multiple levels of prompt complexity support the needs of the casual, intermediate, and advanced business analyst.
  • Reporting analysts can use simple single dialog prompts, or cascading dialogs to guide business analysts through complex report generation options.
